Çitlembik is happy to announce that our newest English book, The Red Apple, has just come out! Written by American author Jonathan Levitan, The Red Apple is a sweeping historical novel that takes place during the two decades leading up to the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople in 1453. The hero is Manuel, a young Greek boy who is conscripted from his Thracian village as part of the Ottoman Empire’s famous (or infamous) devşirme system. He is given the Turkish name İbrahim, converts to Islam, and joins the Janissaries, the elite Ottoman military corps. While the Ottomans are fighting for control of the Balkans, their sights are always set on the glittering jewel that is Constantinople, the “Red Apple.”

As İbrahim experiences the brutality of life on the battlefield, along with the backstabbing political intrigues between rival Janissary factions loyal to the Prince and the Grand Vizier, he begins to question the Janissary life. He falls in love with the beautiful peasant girl Mihrimah, who becomes his own "Red Apple." But since Janissaries cannot marry, İbrahim must choose between his duty to the Sultan and following his heart…

Through the story of Manuel/İbrahim, and the larger historical backdrop of the reigns of Murad II and Mehmed the Conqueror, Ottoman battles with the Crusaders, and the conquest of Constantinople, this historical period comes vividly to life.
